Oscars and India: The Awards and the Indian Connection

With Indian connections shining in four of the major movies which dominate the Oscar nominations namely Silver Linings Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty, Lincoln and Life of Pi this year and are vying for the coveted golden statue, Rockying brings the tale of Oscar winning movies in the past and their India connect. Have a look.

GANDHI

Gandhi

The Indo-British film production Gandhi was the first film with Indian roots to create a wave at the Oscars. An epic biopic directed in 1982 by Richard Attenborough had put India in the international spotlight by winning 11 nominations and eight awards. It was Gandhi which got an Indian the first Oscar. Bhanu Athaiya, who started her career as a costume designer with the film C.I.D, got the coveted award for costume design in the cult classic. The role of Gandhi in the movie was essayed by Ben Kinsley, who is partly of Indian heritage. Kasturba Gandhi was played by famous theatre and television actress Rohini Hattangadi and Nathuram Godse was portrayed by Harsh Nayyar. The music of the film was given by Ravi Shankar. The movie, which went onto win eight Academy Awards, was made almost entirely in India, including the South African scenes.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

After a gap of 27 years, it was Slumdog Millionaire for which Indians once again bagged the top honors. The British film directed by Danny Boyle in 2008 had swept eight awards in 2009 out of 10 nominations. The movie set in the streets of Mumbai is an adaptation of an Indian novel Q&A by Vikas Swarup. Written by Simon Beaufoy and co-directed in India by Loveleen Tandan, the movie boasts of several Indian connections such as Anil Kapoor, Russell Pookutty, A.R. Rahman and Gulzar including the entire cast. Russell Pookutty had won best sound mixing (with Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke), A.R. Rahman won two awards- best original score and best original song (music) and Gulzar won best song (lyrics).The awards reiterated the fact that India has an immense talent pool which needs to be nurtured and brought to the front.

ELIZABETH

Elizabeth Elizabeth

Critically acclaimed and internationally-known Indian film-maker Shekhar Kapur’s Elizabeth made its mark in the Oscars as well. Shekhar Kapur’s Elizabeth was nominated in seven categories in the 71st Academy Awards in 1999, including best picture and best actress. The movie bagged the best makeup Oscar for Jenny Shircore. While his directorial venture, Elizabeth:The Golden Age in 2007, a sequel to Elizabeth, won an Academy Award for best costume design. Alexandra Byrne won the Oscar for best costume design in the same year.

The 2009 Hollywood flick Avatar won three Oscars which includes awards for best art direction, best cinematography and best visual effects. The 3D science fiction with its special effects was a visual treat for us and the movie praised for its technical brilliance has Indian connection to it. Lowry Digital, a subsidiary of Reliance Media Works Ltd (part of the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani group), has enhanced the live-action scenes in the film. And who would not remember Dr Max Patel in the movie, the character not only has Indian name but was played by American actor Dileep A. Rao, born to Indian parents.

SATYAJIT RAY

Satyajit Ray

Last but not least, we cannot forget the contribution of ace and versatile Indian film-maker Satyajit Ray in the world cinema. He remains one of the leading luminaries to have received the prestigious award just weeks before his death. Ray had made movies in different genres starting from fantasy, science fiction to detective films to historical drama. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded an honorary Oscar to Satyajit Ray for lifetime achievement in film-making in 1992.
